Abstract

This article presents an approach to rock art in Los Mellizos, a site located in Chile’s semiarid north, from a perspective that considers this material to be a reflection of practices associated with the construction and transformation of the collective memory of the different peoples who inhabited the area. The possibilities for using the archaeological record as a means to access issues such as notions of the past, the use of the past in the past and collective memory, are discussed, as well as a methodological approach that focuses on the visual characteristics of the site.
