Abstract

This paper will address the tantalising question of why, about thirty five thousand years ago, people living in western Europe produced pictorial art of extraordinary beauty and symbolism. Did it really arise out of nowhere and what changed? Modern science is beginning to provide answers to some of the questions but many remain.
