Abstract

This study interrogates archaeological interpretations of Jharkhand’s prehistoric rock art, which have historically marginalised Adivasi narratives. Through ethnographic fieldwork, oral histories, and community-based participatory research, the study argues that the region’s rock art was not merely an archaeological artefact but a living testament to Adivasi cosmology, ecological stewardship and resistance. Focusing on the Adivasi perspectives,  this study challenges extractive academic practices and advocates for decolonial methodologies that recognise Adivasi sovereignty over cultural heritage.
