Abstract

The rock art complexes of Baga Oigor and Tsagaan Gol valleys in northwestern  Mongolia are part of the largest, most ancient, and best–preserved body of rock art in the  Altai-Sayan mountainous region. Within this massive compendium, the image of the moose  (Alces alces) has received no attention. However, as much as any other representation, this  image reveals the radical transformation of the environment and its cultural implications over  several thousand years. The examination of Alces alces and its pictorial contexts sheds light  on the world by ancient hunters, foragers and early herders and sharpens our understanding  of the dynamics of cultural change.
