Abstract

The Jawoyn Association, Katherine, is undertaking a broad-scale recording of rock art and other cultural heritage sites within Jawoyn lands in south-western Arnhem Land, Australia. The number of rock art sites in the region will doubtless be well into the thousands. A systematic recording form has been devised for the rapid documentation of this resource. To date, 29 complexes have been recorded, incorporating 146 individual sites. These have provided the broad parameters for the range of Jawoyn rock art styles that show principal links to the north (north-western Arnhem Land), with looser links to the west (Daly-Victoria River region), but with a number of distinctive features unique to Jawoyn country.
