Abstract

A particular form of anthropomorphous figure, the Ngar-mimi, was identified as a recurrent motif across the Jawoyn lands of the Arnhem Land plateau. The formal attributes and the distribution of the motif style are described from an archaeological and fine art perspective, and a hypothetical interpretation is proffered. Finally, a comparison with Kimberley Gwion Gwion figures is discussed.
